Is AI Slowly Making You Dumber? The Dark Side of ChatGPT

Saniya MehtaInnovation5 months ago68 Views

Let me talk to you honestly for a minute. ChatGPT feels like magic sometimes. When you ask a question, the answer is there right away. No effort. No delay. No confusion. You will be surprised that many of us open ChatGPT even before we try to think on our own. It is a small habit but it tells a lot. The idea was that AI technology would assist humans and not replace the human thinking process. Slowly, without even realizing it, the technology and the human thoughts are becoming indistinguishable. Therefore, the simple question is: are we becoming smarter with the help of AI, or is it secretly making us less reliant on our own brains?

Brainrot from AI

Why ChatGPT Feels So Good to Use

One of the main reasons we are so crazy about ChatGPT is that it eliminates the friction. No human struggle and no mental effort are involved. There is no need for you to go through different websites. There is no need for you to go through lengthy articles. There is no need for you to make a decision about what is right and what is wrong. The solution is brought to you effortlessly. It is clear. Very well-formatted. Therefore, the brain finds a new shortcut. Why bother thinking deeply when lucidness is just a command away?

How can you imagine going back to slow thinking after having experienced such speed? The comfort that you get from it is quite extraordinary. And comfort is indeed addictive.

From Convenience to Dependence

We initially were very cautious in how we used AI. Our intention was to utilize it for gaining a better understanding of complex topics or for cutting down the time spent on dull tasks.

However, something came about that changed the situation. At the moment, we resort to AI to come up with simple sentences mostly. We keep on using it as a kind of scaffolding for ideas that we already have. We even turn to the AI for a decision on what our feeling towards something is.

I think that this change takes place in a very quiet way. There are no signal warnings. It is simply one day that you realize that thinking for yourself has become tiring. This is the point where support becomes reliance.

How AI Affects the Way We Think

Thinking has similarities to a muscle. The idea is that thinking a lot leads to the muscle getting stronger because it is used a lot. When AI cues our thinking by answering questions for us, the brain relaxes.

First, it feels good that your brain is having a rest. Later, this turns out to be an issue. We no longer allow ourselves to be with the questions. Neither do we go through the process of looking at questions from different sides.

Finally, we don’t suffer from lack of curiosity. Instead of that, we take the first answer that we come across as our own. Aren’t you aware of how infrequently you have been questioning the answers given by the AI lately? This practice gradually diminishes the strength of your critical thinking.

The Problem of Blind Trust

One risky aspect of AI is that it almost always sounds like it is right. Even if the response is incorrect, it gives a confident impression. So we cling to it as if it were the truth itself. We do not bother to double-check the data anymore. We cease to look for the facts. This is not due to our negligence.

AI projects an air of authority which is very convincing. Imagine you’re a little surprised when you hear that people are already citing AI as if it were a real source. This is a dangerous way of thinking.

Students Are Learning Less Than They Think

Students are in fact one of the major users of AI nowadays. Everything seems to work perfectly on the surface. Assignments receive a well-deserved praise for the flawless writing. Answers are perfectly organized and intelligent-looking. Students may even see an improvement in their grades. But learning is definitely more than just prettifying the answers.

Real learning entails struggle and hard work. Once the AI takes away that struggle, higher understanding ceases to exist. So when the time for the exams comes and AI usage is not permitted, what will happen?  The difference will be very ‍‌‍‍‌obvious.

Creators and Writers Feel the Change Too

We‍‌‍‍‌ create content at an incredibly high rate nowadays. Our minds generate ideas so quickly that we come up with the text of a post in no time at all. However, speed is not without its downside. Creators have become so alike these days that it has turned into an issue. We come across articles that are shiny on the outside but lack substance inside. Creativity is one of those things that require friction. You need confusion and trial to creatively come up with new ideas. Originality takes a hit when AI is the one that mulls over the ideas most of the time.

Honestly, I think that content nowadays is visually more appealing but, at the same time, it has become less engaging.

The Illusion of Productivity

AI makes us believe that we are productive. We get a lot of tasks done in a shorter period of time. We have a lighter load of work. Yet, productivity is not only about the completion of tasks. It is also about internalizing what you do. If AI is the one that writes, thinks, and plans, then what else is left for you to contribute? Are you actually creating, or merely giving your nod to the work? This question is of such importance that most of us fail to realize ‍‌‍‍‌that.

Why Our Attention Span Is Shrinking

AI‍‌‍‍‌ provides instant answers, and instant answers are what quick thinking is trained on. We don’t like confirmation and trending of our thoughts. It is that long reading makes one feel bored and deep thinking unnecessary.

Our capacity to concentrate gradually diminishes. Our attention spans are a lot shorter. This is not because AI is bad. It is because we stopped balancing its use.

Using AI the Right Way

AI is not the villain here. The villain is misuse. The right way to do it is very straightforward. Think first. Even if your thoughts are all over the place. Then AI can be used to refine those thoughts. Ask why. Ask how. Ask if there is another side to the story. Use AI as your secondary brain, not the primary one. Here’s what I think. The effort you put in before using AI matters the most.

How to Protect Your Thinking Skills

Sometimes read without shortcuts. Write at least once a day without help. Give yourself permission to be confused. Sit with your problems instead of running away from them. Employ AI after you have made an attempt, not before. That little habit can be a lifesaver of your ‍‌‍‍‌brainpower.

Conclusion

AI‍‌‍‍‌ is a very powerful thing, and it’s not going to disappear anytime soon. ChatGPT is considered to be a pretty amazing tool these days. However, your brain remains your number one tool. Frankly, you might not believe this, but deep thinking is becoming less common. That, therefore, is its value that goes up. Be smart about how you use AI. Don’t allow it to take over your curiosity. Your mind should be given the ‍‌‍‍‌job.
